Pōtorēto. 1980'

In Japan in the 1980s, I photographed couples and families in formal portraits, often using a large-format camera. Traditional dress, ceremonial clothing and carefully composed poses were part of these encounters, particularly in photographs surrounding marriage and family.
I was interested not only in the formality of the portrait, but in the individuals within it—the subtle gestures, expressions and relationships that emerge even within the most carefully arranged photograph.
