Resurrecting Ancestors, 1960–present
Across cultures and centuries, we have preserved the faces of those who came before us—in sculpture, painting, monuments, masks, and objects of remembrance. Resurrecting Ancestors grew from my fascination with these surviving faces and the human desire to remain connected to the past
Through photography, I bring these figures out of their historical settings and encounter them again as individuals. Removed from the distance of museums, temples, tombs, and monuments, they seem strangely present—their expressions, dignity, vulnerability, and humanity crossing centuries to confront our own.
These photographs are not simply records of ancient objects. They are my attempt to give the past another life, and to remind us that those we call ancestors were once as alive, complex, uncertain, and human as we are today.
